There are many ways that you can prepare your hair for colouring. One way is carrying out a hair massage with warm oil. It is pretty simple to do and does not take long to do. Fill a small bowl with argan oil, and warm it up in the microwave for 45 seconds. Brush your hair to ensure its tangle free and dip your fingers into the warm bowl of oil and begin to massage your scalp. Massaging your scalp helps to stimulate your hair follicles, check out my blog post on ‘What are the benefits of a scalp massage?’ . As mentioned above, it is suggested that you use oil on your hair the day before dying.

What should you not do before dying your hair?

You should ensure that your hair is not excessively dirty or greasy before applying dye. It is better for your hair to have a thin layer of natural oils that protect your scalp and help to fight against any strong chemicals that are present in the hair dye. It is recommended to have your hair between clean and dirty, so ideally washing your hair with shampoo 24-48 hours before dying.

If you are going to shampoo and conditioner your hair, using a clarifying shampoo will also help contribute to your hair colouring result. A clarifying shampoo is a shampoo that helps to remove any build-up of chemicals that may be lurking around in your hair still. Whether it be hair mousses, hairspray, chlorine and chemicals from swimming pools. Using the clarifying shampoo and a good conditioner, will help the result.

Should I shampoo my hair after dying it?

After having your hair coloured, the longer you can leave your hair before shampooing the more effective the colour dye will be. When using dye on your hair, colour molecules from the dye pass through the cuticle through to the cortex (inner part of your hair strand). The colour molecules begin to join together, eventually becoming permanently trapped in the hair shaft. Your hair shaft can take up to 3 working days to close, so leaving your hair at least 3 days before washing with shampoo, is a great way to ensure you get the most out of your colour.

Opting into a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner is another great way to ensure that you get the most out of your hair colour treatment. Sulfate-free is an ingredient used to help create a foaming effect, however it can cause natural oils and moisture to strip away from your hair. Using sulfate-free products on your hair have a range of different benefits, helps to reduce scalp irritation, reduce frizz and leaves your hair with more moisture making it softer and less brittle.

Do you shampoo your hair when rinsing out dye?

Wait 72 hours before shampooing your hair to rinse out hair dye as it helps to ensure that your hair produces natural oils that leave a protective layer on your scalp. Not forgetting that it also takes the roughly the same period of time before the cuticle layers close completely, leaving your hair this long before using shampoo will ensure that the colour molecule is trapped resulting in longer lasting hair colour.

Do you wash out hair dye with cold or warm water?

Wash your hair dye out with cold water if possible, using warm water will not cause much harm to your hair but bear in mind that the hotter the water, the more your hair cuticles open resulting in colour molecules escaping, which will not give you the best hair colour results.

Remember using hair masks will help you keep your healthy. Invest in getting a good hair mask and use this at least once a week. This will help to keep the ends of your hair moisturised resulting in less breakage and damage. I keep to using a hair mask at least one a week and in fact leave it on overnight, to ensure my hair absorbs all of the nutrients given from the hair mask.
